Shot/Reverse Shot: 167 - 2017 Preview

There's a brand new year stretching out ahead of us, which means 12 months of films good and bad to sift through. To help sort the wheat from the chaff (except in the instances where the chaff sounds weirdly fascinating), I'm joined by John Hunter to discuss the films and TV shows that we're most intrigued by between now and when awards season kicks off in September.

Shot/Reverse Shot: 124 - 2016 Preview

It's a new year, and technically a new season of Shot/Reverse Shot (when you do an episode every week it becomes hard to split these things up neatly), so we do what we do every January and look at what the year ahead has to offer. We run down the films that we're excited about, the films we're skeptical of, and the films that are complete unknown qualities at this point, but which could very well appear on our best of lists at the end of the 2016. Here's to another great year of films and talking about films.

Shot/Reverse Shot: Episode 111 - Autumn/Winter 2015 Preview

Autumn means a number of things. The leaves are changing colour, kids are back in school, and movies are about to get good again. A tradition as old as time itself, or at least as old as 2012, this episode finds Matt and myself talking about the films we are looking forward to between now and December 31st. In addition to big hitters like The Martian, The Hateful Eight, and Oscar Isaac and Domhnall's Gleeson's follow-up to Ex Machina, we take some time to talk about smaller offerings like Room, Bone Tomahawk and Carol, offer our thoughts on upcoming TV shows, and try our hardest not to get sidetracked by proposing sequels that Ridley Scott could make instead of one for Prometheus. We are at least 60% successful in that endeavour.

Incidentally, I can't be the only one who is disappointed that Bone Tomahawk and Carol are separate movies, right? Who wouldn't want to watch Cate Blanchett and Kurt Russell team up to hunt cannibals? Communists, that's who.

Shot/Reverse Shot: Episode 78 - 2015 Preview

It's a new year which means that it's time to look ahead at what's to come in 2015. Fortunately, Matt and I are prepared to guide you through the potentially perilous territory of sequels, remakes and, yes, original films that will be hitting multiplexes over the next twelve months. It's not all Star Wars, but there is some Star Wars, so sorry if you're already sick of that stuff. We also talk about new TV shows that we're looking forward to, and take the idea of a preview even further by discussion our plans for the podcast in 2015.

This blockbuster season was one of the better in recent years, with very few truly awful films and a handful of genuinely great ones in the mix, but the slate of films due to come out over the last three months of 2014 promise to make them all look like utter garbage. As is our wont, Joe and I sat down with the Autumn/Winter schedule and picked out the projects that most interest us, and which promise to be either the best or worst films of the year. And yet we still manage to get sidetracked buy a discussion of how awful The Sweetest Thing is.

2013 is more or less over and done with, give or take an overblown awards ceremony or two, so it's only right that we should turn our attention to what the New Year has to offer. As is traditional (in that we've done it three times now) Joe Gastineau and myself sit down and try to sort the wheat from the chaff, talking about what blockbusters we're excited for and which ones we're dreading, which smaller, artier and generally crazier films we've got our eyes on, and we round things off with a brief discussion of which new TV shows we're most interested in. We also find time to announce our attempt to come up with our own canon of under-discussed masterpieces which constitutes a big, year long project for us.

Taking a scattershot approach to the Autumn schedule, by which I mean talking about the films we're actually a little bit interested in, Joe Gastineau and I take in potential blockbusters, Oscar hopefuls and ribald comedies, while pondering whether or not Orson Scott Card is engaged in a Producers-style scam involving the Ender's Game adaptation, and accidentally pitch the scariest film ever made.

Shot/Reverse Shot: Episode 20 - 2013

Having opened our presents, eaten to we felt sick and seen in the New Year in style (or, in my case, wrapped up in a blanket, shivering from a nasty cold), Shot/Reverse Shot returns to business as usual: rambling discussion and vaguely film related nonsense.

In this episode, we take a long, hard (primarily long) look at the year ahead in film, from the epic grandeur of Guillermo Del Toro's filthy-sounding robot 'em up Pacific Rim to the latest mind-melting oddity from Shane Carruth, very much the low-budget thinking man's Terrence Malick. Along the way, I voice tentative hopes for Michael Bay's Pain & Gain, much to Joe's disdain, a bizarre new feature and our customary Top Ten, which culminates in a surprising choice for our most anticipated film of the year. By Odin's Raven, it looks to be a good one.
