Online Film Critics Society Award Winners Announced

Over the last few weeks, I've been frantically trying to catch up on the best films of the year (and some of the worst which people mistakenly believe are the best) in order to vote in the Online Film Critics Society's (OFCS) annual awards. The nominations were announced last week, and today the names of the winners were released. Those winners can be found below, and I have also highlighted all of my 1st place choices in each category to see how well my choices lined up with the eventual winners (and because in previous years I forgot what my top choices were almost as soon as I made them).

Spoilers: I was really in the tank for Fury Road, and so were many of my fellow critics, because we are shiny and chrome.

OFCS Awards Nominations

Earlier today, the nominations for the Online Film Critics Society's (OFCS), an organisation of which I am a member, 18th annual awards were announced. Reflecting a generally strong year with a great breadth of quality, the nominations run the gamut from expected and long-standing critical favourites like Richard Linklater's Boyhood, which landed six nominations and shares the lead for most nods with The Grand Budapest Hotel, to the lesser discussed but still brilliant likes of Under the Skin and The Babadook. I'm particularly delighted to see Essie Davis nominated for Best Actress for her performance in the latter film, which is far and away my favourite performance by any Actress (or Actor, for that matter) this year. It's an all-round solid slate, and while I'd have liked to see Tsai Ming-liang's Stray Dogs nominated for Best Film Not in the English Language, what are you going to do?

The winners will be announced next Monday, the 15th, and I will spend the next week trying to catch up on the films I've yet to see in time for the final vote. You can see the full list of nominees below.

Online Film Critics Society Award Winners Announced

This morning, the winners for the 17th Annual Online Film Critics Society Awards were revealed. The big winner, as has been case with many other critics' groups, was Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave, which was awarded Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress and Adapted Screenplay. Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity was no slouch, either; it won Best Director, Editing and Cinematography, and was awarded a special award for its revolutionary special effects.

Meanwhile, Act of Killing won Best Documentary in an incredibly strong category; Cate Blanchett took Best Actress for Blue Jasmine; Blue is the Warmest Colour was awarded Best Film Not In The English Language; and The Wind Rises, the final film from Hayao Miyazaki, won Best Animated Feature.

Online Film Critics Society Awards Nominations

Yesterday, the Online Film Critics Society, a critics group of which I am a proud member, unveiled the nominees for their 17th annual awards. Apart from the lack of love for Frances Ha, which was the film I wanted to see get recognition above pretty much everything else, it's a pretty solid list with a couple of surprises, most notably the Best Picture nomination for Johnnie To's Drug War, a very good film that otherwise hasn't be mentioned much during this awards season.

I'm going to spend the next week frantically trying to watch the films I've not seen yet in time to vote for the winners, which will be announced next Monday.
