François Truffaut once said that "Film lovers are sick people." He may have been on to something.

Oscars 2013 Prediction Scorecard
A few days ago, I posted my predictions for the 2012 Oscars, breaking the categories into Technical and Major Awards. In the process, I predicted that Lincoln would take most of the biggies, that Skyfall would win Best Cinematography, and that rank sentimentality would ensure a third Oscar for Robert De Niro.
Shows what I fucking know, right?
Anyway, I might have gotten a few awards wrong, but how did I do overall? Let's have a quick look.

Film Review: Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)
Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) is a young girl who lives with (or at least near) her father (Dwight Henry) as part of an island community known as The Bathtub. This band of outsiders live on the other side of the levees in Louisiana, where they eke out a meagre existence fishing for catfish and crabs. It's a hardscrabble life, but one which is largely free of most of the concerns of the modern world, with most days ending in drunken celebrations full of laughter and singing. As seen through the eyes of Hushpuppy, it's a life filled with quiet moments of magic and wonder, and even though she doesn't know where her mother is and her father has a tendency to disappear for days at a time, she seems happy with her open, strange childhood.

You've Got To Accentuate The Positive: What's Good About The 2013 Oscar Nominations?
It's very easy to be cynical about the Oscars, especially since at their worst, they're little more than a smug, self-satisfied display of onanism practiced by people who already have too many reasons to feel pleased with themselves. This year's ceremony could potentially be even worse thanks to the presence of host Seth Macfarlane, a man who is the very embodiment of smug, self-satisfied onanism. At their best, though, the Academy Awards act as a celebration of the pageantry and magic of the movies, and even a disastrous slate of nominations can provide for plenty of discourse, and a car-crash of an awards ceremony promises to be great fodder for the rubberneckers of the world.
