After the Star Wars panel at this year's Comic-Con, during which much was made about the fact that The Force Awakens makes extensive use of practical effects, Matt and I thought it would be fun to discuss the role that special effects play in filmmaking, both historically and today, and the strengths and weaknesses of both practical and digital effects.
