Things I Learned From Movie X: Piranha 3D

Here's my latest Things I Learned From Movie X column, this time about Piranha 3D, the sort of remake but not really of the 1978 Joe Dante film. I'd say that it's more of a continuation of the series than a remake, since it doesn't really retread the same plot as the original - the source of the Piranhas themselves is completely different, for one - but does match the irreverent tone that makes the original so charming. What sets it apart, though, is how outrageous it is. The advances that special effects have done since the first film came out mean that Alexandre Aja can do literally anything he wants, and the freedom to explore the crazy stuff that special effects make possible does give the film most of its sleazy charm.
